Dennis DuVal retired as Chief of Police in Syracuse , NY in 2004 after 27 years of Law Enforcement service. He began his Law Enforcement career as a Deputy with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department. His career with the Syracuse New York Police Department began in 1978 as an Officer in Uniform Bureau-Patrol. Prior to being appointed as Chief, he served as a Detective, Patrol Shift Supervisor, Deputy Chief in Community Services and General Services and finally as Chief of Detectives, Investigations Bureau also SWAT Team Commander. He earned multiple distinctions during his Law Enforcement career receiving Governor Mario Cuomo’s Certificate of Merit for Bravery, the Syracuse New York Police Benevolent Association medal of Valor/Bravery, the Governor of the State of New York Police Officer of the Year Award, and was a distinguished nominee for the New York State Police Office of the Year in the inaugural year of the award.
During his time as Syracuse Police Chief, he drove the formation of the Central New York Information Sharing Project. Nationally recognized, the project has been spotlighted and further funded by the State of New York and Departments of Justice and Homeland Security as a model for information sharing and inter-jurisdictional cooperation. Prior to beginning his law enforcement career, Dennis was a College All-American and an Academic All-American for the prestigious Syracuse University basketball program. He has been inducted into the Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame and spent three years in the National Basketball Association playing with both the Washington Bullets and the Atlanta Hawks.
